If you’ve ever been to Key West, once you get over the immaculate beauty of the ocean, the marinas teaming with charter boats for hire, dozens of bars serving brewski’s on Duval Street, get your picture with the Southernmost Buoy and only then might you notice that the street names are posted on cement power and light poles… only maybe.
Do you have any idea why a city might do such a thing instead of almost every other city in the U.S. using u-shaped metal poles and standard metal street signs? Could it be a cost factor, a tourist gimmick, for convince purposes, or might it be so simple of a fact that being Florida’s southernmost city making it more susceptible to hurricanes than any other city in the entire USA? Think about, a metal street sign verses a cement pole… which one do you think would be most likely standing after a category 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 hurricane? When I heard this, I had to simply shake my head and say: “Wow, I never even thought of that!” So when you’re in old town take special notice of what others would NEVER even notice without being pointed out to them. In that case… consider yourself notified! Oh yeah, they also put them on wooden phone and light poles too as pictured below. Now you may pick up your certificate for passing the educated tourist test… and now you know!
